EMERGENCY IN PAKISTAN TIGHTENED HUNDREDS DETAINED PAKISTAN NEWS HEADLINES

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN NEWS STORIES: - The President General Parvez Musharaff tightened the emergency imposed on Sunday. The Pakistani police took hundreds of opponents. The government warned that it could lead to delay in key elections for a year or more. The General defied the international condemnation and suspended the constitution and sacked the Chief Justice and even imposed strict media curbs as well.

The Police setup barricades with paramilitary soldiers support on Sunday to block access to the Parliament, the presidential residence and the Supreme Court buildings. The media in Pakistan like Dawn, referred it as a second coup by General Musharaff taking his 1999 power grabbing as the first. The Daily Times called it as martial law.

The law enforcement agencies also detained the Chairwoman of the Human Rights Commission Asma Jehangir at her house in Lahore and took about 40 of her organisation personnel.

The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has told in Jerusalem that US will review aid to Pakistan.
