EMERGENCY IN PAKISTAN MAY LAST AT LEAST ONE MONTH PAKISTAN NEWS STORY HEADLINES


ISLAMABAD PAKISTAN NEWS HEADLINES: - Attorney General Malik Qayyum has said that the General elections in Pakistan are likely to be held in February and Emergency could be lifted as early as within a month. National and provincial assemblies will be dissolved by November 15, when their term ends and polls are likely to be held within 90 days thereafter, the top government lawyer said. The Attorney General Malik Qayyum also said that the meeting was attended by chief of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Shujaat Hussein and other top government functionaries.

The Attorney General Malik Qayyum told the Dawn news channel that this was "almost finalised" at a high-level meeting chaired by President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday evening. The Attorney General Malik Qayyum also said that Emergency, imposed by Musharraf on November 3, is likely to be lifted in a "minimum period of 01 month to a maximum of 02 months" depending on the improvements in situation and talks with media to evolve a broadcasting regulation code. He also said an ordinance will be issued to restrict the strength of the Supreme Court to 12 from 17, including the Chief Justice.
