EMERGENCY DECLARED IN PAKISTAN NEWS

PAKISTAN PRESIDENT MUSHARRAF DECLARES EMERGENCY IN PAKISTAN ON FIRDAY THE 03 NOVEMBER 2007

ISLAMABAD: - The Pakistan president General Musharraf has declared emergency in Pakistan. General Musharraf addressed the nation and said that the Emergency was unavoidable due to the requirement to maintain national unity in the face of "serious internal strife". He said that terrorism in Pakistan had reached an extreme level and extremists had challenged the writ of the government. If tough and uncomfortable decisions were not taken now, Pakistan might plunge into a crisis.

The UN secretary of state Condoleezza Rice termed General Musharaff's decision to declare emergency very regrettable in his comments on CNN.

Nawaz Sharif, the fromer premier, condemned the emergency and called upon General Musharraf to step down. He said that General Musharaff is part of a problem and not part of solution.

The Private TV channels were down along with telephones and mobile phones immediately after the declaration of emergency for some time.

The former Premier Benazir Bhutto also had warned earlier this week that the opposition would never accept the imposition of an emergency and has returned to Pakistan from Dubai.

The United States on Saturday said that it was deeply disturbed that emergency has been declared in Pakistan by President General Parvez Musharraf. A state of emergency would be a sharp setback for Pakisatan democracy and takes Pakistan off the path towards civilian rule.

Britain also said that it was gravely concerned at the declaration of emergency and urged General Musharraf to act within the constitution.

Sweden says the situation was "very worrying" and could lead to the escalation of violence.
